The Mummers Parade is an American tradition held each New Year's Day in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. t is thought to be the oldest folk festival in the United States. Local clubs compete for thousands of dollars in prizes in one of four categories: comics, fancies, string bands and fancy brigades. Participants labor almost a full year preparing elaborate costumes, music, and pageantry for this parade which starts in South Philly and travels up Broad Street. The Mummers Parade is as much a part of Philadelphia history as the Liberty Bell and cheese steaks.
